I was talking with a parent the other day about a conversation they had with their child regarding Jesus’ return and what life in our resurrection bodies would be like. Their child, who is 6, became really excited at the possibility of going up to meet Jesus in the clouds.

The conversation went something like this: “Daddy, I think Christians are going to get to fly up to be with Jesus in the clouds.” The dad replied, “Wow, buddy! That’s right! The Bible actually tells us that we will be caught up with Jesus as He comes down to earth when He returns one day (1 Thes 4:16-18).” “Really!” shouted the child, “We get to fly!” “Uh huh,” said dad. “What if I’m in the house and I fly up? Will I bonk my head on the ceiling?” Dad responded, “I don’t think so bud, I think God will make it so our bodies can go through the ceiling.” “Whoa! I want to see Jesus! I can’t wait to see Jesus! When I see Him I’m going to hug Him all day! Can I hug Him all the way through breakfast and all the way through lunch?” shouted the boy. “Yeah, I’m sure you can,” said the dad. Wanting to gauge his child’s heart he asked, “Why do you want to hug Jesus so much? What do you love about Him?” “I love Him because He died for my sins so I could go be with Him in Heaven!” answered the boy.

If you’re a parent, does your child want to see Jesus? Do they know and understand what Jesus has done for them on the cross? Are they being taught unmerited favor (grace) or to earn favor by being a “good” little boy or girl? Does your child know what it means to be a Christian? Do you know what your child believes?

Obviously, to know the above you’ve got to spend time with your child in the Bible and conversation that drills deeper than how they did on their test or how to develop their soccer skills. How often do you spend time with your child in prayer, the Bible, and Christ-centered conversation? Let me back up. Do you really have a heart to see your children raised as true, heartfelt disciples of Jesus? How high of value do you place on the condition and eternal destination of their soul verses your comfort and lifestyle?

Deuteronomy 6 calls us to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and strength; AND to impress that love for God and His commandments upon our children’s hearts. It calls us to speak of God and His commandments, including (with a Christ-centered/NT twist) our inability to meet those commandments and His grace, as you “walk by the way” or in modern day context—when you’re in the car, when you’re kicking the soccer ball around, when you’re tucking them into bed at night, or when you’re getting beat by them on their favorite video game system.

The Bible calls us to do everything to the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31). Could you explain to your child how to eat a jelly bean to the glory of God? How about raking up leaves to the glory of God? Jelly beans taste good. God gave us taste buds to enjoy food. What a good God we serve. Or raking up leaves takes work. God created man to work and till the earth and it was fun, but man rebelled against God. Thus God made the earth rebel against man so that his work is hard in order to show us how sad God is when we rebel against Him. The good news is we’re saved from our rebellion through Jesus. These could be a just a few ways to turn something seemingly normal into a God-glorifying event.

Parents, I challenge you to always be thinking about how you can turn a simple moment with your child into an engagement for Christ. I challenge you to spend time with your children in the Word and Christ-centered conversation. I implore you to know where your child is at in their relationship with God and to pray that God gives you the grace and wisdom to direct them towards Him.

Mars Hill provides many resources to do so. We’ve developed a set of family devotional questions to accompany the Luke Series. You can find these HERE and could discuss them at breakfast, dinner, or before bed. The Mars Hill Shoreline Children’s Ministry is handing out take home papers titled “By the Way” (Deut. 6) to reinforce what your child learned in class at home all week. We in children’s ministry have just a few hours with your child a week. We’re here to support parents—who have dozens of hours with their kids—in raising children on mission for Jesus. These take home papers are one way we’re doing so. There are other great devotional resources outside of Mars Hill. Bruce Ware offers this great family devotional resource for starters.

Children are a blessing from God. Parents have been tasked with training their children’s hearts and equipping their minds for Jesus (Ephesians 6:4; Deuteronomy 6). Jesus came to turn the hearts of the fathers towards their children in order to “make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (Malachi 4:6; Luke 1:17). It is my prayer that by the grace of Jesus and the love of God you as parents will do just that!

“Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:6-11

Praise Jesus for humbling Himself, coming to earth as the God-man, and dying on the cross for our wretched sins. Praise Jesus for rising from the grave in triumphant victory over Satan, sin, and death. Praise Jesus that through Him we are brought back into relationship with God. Praise Jesus that He is transforming His people into His likeness, so that Christians together may worship God and live out the gospel as salt and light in a dark, brutal world.

It is with great humility that I report to you that Jesus was lifted up high and exalted as King at Upward Bound VBS 2009. The gospel of Jesus Christ was proclaimed to over 90 children each day at the Lakeside Apartments in Mountlake Terrace. Monday through Friday the children entered into a camp-hike-trail setting where they learned about Jesus’ journey from heaven to earth and back again for His glory and our salvation. The munchkins were visited each day at Base Camp by a hiker who used his journey on the trail to share the gospel with the kids.

Moreover, the children were taught to use their Trail Guide (the Bible) and Trail Journal (homework booklets) to aid them in what is hopefully their upward bound (vs. earthly bound) journey towards heaven. A handful of characters ranging from Simon of Cyrene to Mary Magdalene visited the children each day to share their personal encounters with Jesus! The children together donated over $200 towards Living Water International and worked hard to learn scripture memory and more about what it looks like to follow Jesus. They enjoyed music, crafts, games, and snacks every day.

Close to 15 kids joined us during the week from the Lakeside Apartments—many of whom don’t regularly attend church, but were able to hear the gospel of Jesus. Some of the kids from the apartments had memorized scripture on their first day and were excited to hear more. We were also able to give away about 20 Jesus Storybook Bibles to kids without Bibles. The Storybook Bibles had been donated to MH for this very purpose. That’s about 20 kids who are now able to read about God’s redemptive plan through Jesus in a way that is concrete and reaches them at their age level.

One of the greatest blessings surrounding VBS was the volunteers. MH Shoreline has the greatest Children’s Ministry volunteers. They endured three 2 hour VBS planning meetings and sacrificed so much to study, plan, prepare, and execute VBS. Many volunteers showed up at 7:15am to help with set up and stayed until 1pm to make sure everything was stored in our VBS truck.

Even though the volunteers had Honey Buckets for bathrooms, goose poop on the ground, and it was cloudy and wet—every volunteer always had a big smile on their face. The joy in their hearts from serving and sharing Jesus with the kids was manifested in their great attitudes, big smiles, and loving kindness. One of our leads sprained her ankle mid-week and wasn’t able to make the last two days. The other volunteers stepped up to fill the gaps and came unannounced on days they weren’t scheduled to serve—all for Jesus’ glory and the children’s joy! It gave me so much joy to see their hearts for Jesus and the kids!

The kids were treated to pizza and a bouncy house on the last day. Parents from the apartments were able to attend this event and fellowship with the teachers, volunteers, and families.

Overall, Jesus was lifted up high and exalted at VBS. Many kids from the apartments were invited to MH Shoreline. We are working on taking them to/from the Shoreline Campus on Sundays. I’m so grateful to Jesus that we were able to be used by Him for His glory and children and families’ joy through VBS. What a huge blessing it is to serve in His name.

Below is some parental feedback on the impact VBS had on their children and families. Enjoy!

“My 4 year old has been talking about Jesus a lot more, it seems like she is more aware that He connects to everything in her life.”

“My son still recites the verses he learned and seems to be much more Christ focused during the day. Normally any spiritual discussion is prompted from us, the parents, but ever since VBS he’s been asking more questions and talking about Jesus a lot more.”

“My daughter was very eager to be more helpful (and has continued to be so) and is still out of the blue telling me her bible verses.”

“My son isn’t old enough to know much about Jesus, but the 1st 2 days he did NOT want me 2 leave him there and by the 3rd he was excited and ready 2 get going every morning. I used this opportunity to get some Bible stories to read to him at night instead of regular stories.”

“Both of my kids are talking about Jesus between themselves more; we always have Bible time and pray together, but the impact of learning about Jesus from other believers (their teachers and guides) was a huge impact for them! Yeah!!!”

“When memorizing the verses, it was a great teaching opportunity and my son was asking a lot of questions.”

by Matt Grant

To be honest, things are really tight in the Children’s Ministry right now. We’ve burned out volunteers and are on the verge of maxing out more. A child was turned away a few weeks ago and we’ve been very close to turning more families away on Sundays. We’re blessed with the greatest volunteers and families at MH Shoreline. I love them so much and hate to see them overburdened, potentially burnt out, or turned away.

It’s simple. In order to effectively support families in building children on mission for Jesus we need more Sunday volunteers. We need more people to comfort and pray for infants. We need more people to help toddlers share and sacrifice like Jesus. We need more people to take an interest in preschoolers’ lives and new walk with Christ. We need more people to help 7 year olds memorize scripture and show their friends Jesus.

If every parent using the Children’s Ministry served once every six weeks-that’s twice per quarter…that’s it-then a huge burden would be relieved, volunteers could be more productive, families with younger kids would get 90 minutes to hear the sermon in peace, and the body of Christ would be further strengthened together and built up in Christ (I Cor 12).

Please prayerfully consider serving once every six weeks in the Children’s Ministry. You do not need to prepare in advance. Merely show up 30 minutes early on the Sunday you’re slated to serve; and help love on the munchkins for 90-110 minutes-twice every 3 months. I don’t think that’s asking too much and it would be a huge blessing to the entire body of Christ and families at Shoreline.

Last week, Mars Hill Shoreline kicked off its first ever “mission week.” MH Shoreline community and service groups were encouraged to show kindness, love, and compassion by actively serving their neighbors in the north King and Snohomish County region. With this Biblical call to love others in mind, Shoreline Children’s Ministry parents, kids, and volunteers spent last Wednesday night building relationships with folks at the CRISTA Nursing Center.

Everybody had a wonderful time getting to know each other through singing songs such as Father Abraham, Deep & Wide, Nothing but the Blood, and Amazing Grace. Kids, parents, and seniors teamed up to create paper-plate pumpkins as well. The pumpkin crafts and songs were a great way to facilitate friendships across multiple generations. Having a group of children ages 35 days-12 years old, parents, and volunteers visit really helped put a smile on the Nursing Center residents’ faces; and went along way in providing them (some as old as 101) with company and fellowship for the glory of God.

It was also awesome to see children serving alongside their parents and siblings while learning firsthand what it means to actively show the love of Jesus to others. Many of the older children stepped out of their mini-comfort zones to help the residents with crafts and wheel them back to their rooms when the event was over.

All-in-all the event was a huge success and the CM is looking forward to visiting the CRISTA Nursing Center again very soon. I can’t state enough the overwhelming joy brought to my heart by spending an hour and a half with MH families and volunteers showing the love of Jesus to the residents at the CRISTA Nursing Center.

Next to our own relationship with Jesus and our role of being a loving spouse that reflects the relationship of Jesus Christ (Eph. 5:22-33; role of the husband) to the church (role of the wife), shepherding your kids is the most important thing you will do. Our Praxis class, “Shepherding Your Kids”, this fall will be a great opportunity for parents, or soon-to-be parents, to learn what it means to speak to the heart of your child to see the gospel of Jesus transform them to obedience and to honor God and parents (Eph. 6:1-2).

This weekend, Mars Hill Church has an amazing opportunity to have Tedd Tripp, renowned author of “Shepherding a Child’s Heart” and “Instructing a Child’s Heart” (two books that will help guide our study this fall), teach us solid and trustworthy biblical principles for parents, at the Shepherding a Child’s Heart Conference.

The biggest responsibility of parenthood is teaching your children to love Jesus with all of their heart, soul, and strength. For parents with children of any age, Dr. Tripp’s insightful, biblical teaching provides perspectives and procedures for shepherding your child’s heart into the paths of life.

Dr. Tripp has 30+ years of experience as a counselor, school administrator, father, grandfather and pastor of Grace Fellowship Church in Hazleton, PA. Tedd says, “Parents tend to focus on the externals of behavior rather than the internal overflow of the heart. We tend to worry more about the ‘what’ of behavior than the ‘why.’ Accordingly, most of us spend an enormous amount of energy in controlling and constraining behavior. To the degree and extent to which our focus is on behavior, we miss the heart.”

The goal of our Praxis “Shepherding Your Kids” class is to build on this conference and continue to equip parents to lead their children spiritually, to impress God’s truth on the hearts of their children, and to point them to the great joy and happiness that they can experience through delighting in God and the goodness of His ways.

I hope you are able to join us this weekend and I look forward to having many of you in our class this fall.

I led devotions this morning on the subject of humility and anxiety from I Peter 5. God gets the most glory when we cast our anxiety on Him and bring our worries to Him in prayer and petition with thanksgiving. See below for notes from todays devotional and prayer requests for our campus.

Men’s Prayer 9.17.08

Our Purpose (Romans 15:30 paraphrased): I urge you brothers, by the Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in prayer to God the Father for the glory of the name of Jesus.

The topic: Humility and Anxiety (based on John Piper’s sermon – Anxieties: To Be Cast Not Carried)

I Peter 5:5-7 “Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward on another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him because he cares for you.”

God hates pride and calls us to humility in all things. In I Peter 5, humility is associated with anxiety (humble yourself…casting your anxiety on Him). Anxiety is the opposite of boldness (Piper). It can be excessive, all consuming, distracting, and immobilizing.

What kind of things or situations do we usually associate with anxiety?

What does humility have to do with anxiety?

How does humility create anxiety?

What do humility and control have in common?

How can we practically cast our anxiety on God?

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious in anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

God commands us to not be anxious in anything and promises that if we come to Him in prayer, and thanksgiving for his faithfulness, then He will guard our heart and mind with peace through Jesus.

John 15:7-8 “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”

We can ask God to give us peace and to carry our burdens-because He commands us to! We can humbly come to the throne of Grace and strive in prayer for God to help us cast our anxieties on Him…obediently trusting Him. God will grant our request because it is in accordance with His will and He will be most glorified through our trust in Him. God will get more glory in us trusting Him, then in selfish, prideful, control-oriented worrying; and we will bear fruit for Him!

Some Quotes from Piper’s Sermon

“God loves to magnify His power in carrying your anxiety…the one who carries the burden gets the glory.” SO cast your anxiety on Him!

“Before you can humbly put yourself under God’s mighty hand, you’ve got to take your anxiety and confidently put it in His mighty hand…you’re under God and your anxieties are on God. You’ve got to stoop down and lay the anxiety stuff on top of God and then go under it. He’s carrying it and exerting His hands up off you, so you’re sheltered. If the anxiety is with you underneath, then His hand is coming down on you heavy until you get rid of it. You’ve got this mighty hand that upholds the universe and you’re told to go under there; and as you do, take your anxiety and put it on that powerful hand, because He very much wants to carry it.”

Shoreline Campus Prayer Requests

Pray that God would use the new sermon series ‘The Peasant Princess’, to draw people in to our church to hear the Gospel and be brought from death to life. Pray for the ministry of reconciliation to move forward through this series. Pray for healing from sexual sin, and for healing in hurting marriages through this series.

Pray for a permanent facility to lease or buy for the Shoreline Campus.

Pray that the body at Shoreline would be motivated and inspired to actively live out their faith in missional engagement through Praxis midweek community and training this fall.

Pray that this weekend’s Parenting Conference is effective in compelling veteran, current, and future parents to disciple their children’s hearts for Jesus.

As we have been studying about prayer, and as I was meditating on Pastor Mark’s sermon on prayer, and specifically God’s identity as our Father, Jesus his perfect Son and the firstborn of many brothers, and our relationship to him, I was blessed with a beautiful illustration. I had the opportunity to go out on my in-law’s boat on Lake Stevens a few weeks ago after work and we got pulled behind it a bit. I asked my daughter Solie a few times if she would like to come out in the water with me on the skis and give it a try. She generally won’t go for that, she is a bit of a weenie about the simple things even, but she kept saying “yes.” When we tried to put her in the water she would panic, so we reassured her that she didn’t have to. We told her it was up to her, it would be fun, that I would take good care of her, that she would be safe, and that she would have a blast. She was also able to watch me and some others out there wakeboarding and skiing without getting hurt and having a lot of fun.

Well, she decided she would do it and got in the water. Once it became real and she was out there with me, she started to get a little panicky. I reassured her, held her tight, told her to hold on to the handle of the rope with both hands, and that I would hold the other side. The boat took off, we got pulled up out of the water, I held the rope with one hand, held her safely with the other, and she held on the other side tightly. She was thrilled and absolutely loved it! I kept it simple, went back and forth a couple of times in the middle, and helped her get a better grasp and feel a little of the tug of the rope so she felt like she was doing it herself-even though in reality she was a couple feet off the water without skis. Then I told her we were going to let go. I had her let go first and we slowed and sank into the water and stopped.

Her reaction, “That was fun! Let’s do it again!”

“Right now?” I asked.

“No, maybe later.” And she gave me a high five.

A little later in the evening, she was talking big about her experience. She kept getting questions and comments such as, “Did you water ski?”; “You did it all by yourself!”; “Good job!”; “Were you waterskiing?”

A couple times she said “Yeah, I was waterskiing, yeah I did it!” then it switched to, “I was waterskiing with my dad, he was waterskiing, and he held on to me and I held on to the rope…”

It suddenly dawned on me that this was a great image of how Jesus works with us. It is easy for us to take credit for our capabilities, successes, achievements, and even our salvation to some degree. He first builds up trust in us through a pattern of grace and truth, and then asks us to step out into unknown water. If we surrender to his will and are in concert with his desires, then everything works. He does all the real work, and gives us a chance to participate. We get to hold the rope, but he has all the weight on it. We have our feet out, but he is the one standing on solid ground holding us up. We participate in his work but can take no credit for the outcome that he works through us. It also gives us tremendous joy and we want to do it again! If we brag about how we were waterskiing on our own, we are found to be liars, but if we say that our Father was waterskiing, and he brought us along for the ride and gave us a hand in it… for our joy and his pleasure….then perfect.

And believe me, as a father, I enjoyed it far more than she did!

Philippians 4:13
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Jeremiah 9:12
Let those who boast, boast in the Lord.

John 15:5
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
